This Is Spinal Tap - Waste Not, Want Not (PG)
"You're in time," David yelled over the chatter of voices as he took a hotdog from Nigel. "The fireworks haven't started yet."
"Oh, great. I know you don't like mustard, so I got relish – that alright?"
David took a bite of his hotdog and briefly considered his answer, before nodding enthusiastically. "Yeah, it's good."
The balmy summer air made for a warm night, and the pair stood only in thin jackets as they looked out across New York Harbor. As if the reflection of the Statue of Liberty cast in rippling jade on the water's surface wasn't exciting enough, the crowded throngs of party-goers lining the streets made the atmosphere buzz with cheer.
"D'you think it's a bit hypocritical," Nigel muttered through a mouth full of bread roll, "us spending Independence Day here?"
David stared at the water, thoughtfully. "I dunno. It's for independence, innit, Independence Day? That's what it's about, right? I mean, we're being independent here –"
"Yeah, yeah. We're on tour – that's being independent."
"Yeah, we're away from home, that's independence. That's what the word means."
"You're right – it is." Nigel took another bite, his expression serious. The two stood together in quiet contemplation, only moving to take occasional mouthfuls of hotdog, when the silence was broken by a shrieking whizz and a loud boom.
"Nigel," David shouted as he pointed up, "look!" A series of fireworks shot up into the sky in blues and crimsons and stunning silver, and a huge bang followed by hundreds of squealing stars made him jump. "Wow..."
Nigel laughed at David's excitement, and gazed at the wide grin on the blond's face. The fireworks cast a blue glow across his skin, fading into yellow and then purple – highlighting, Nigel noticed, the stray blob of hotdog relish at the edge of his bottom lip. Encouraged by the buzzing atmosphere, he quickly dashed his head in closer to lick the relish off, his lips resting against David's warm mouth longer than necessary to feel the scrape of new stubble against his skin.
When he pulled away, David turned to him with a curious expression.
"You had relish round your mouth," Nigel shrugged innocently. "Waste not, want not."
As Nigel turned to watch the fireworks again, he missed the newer smile that spread across David's face.
